European Oak (Quercus robur)

A reference entry. European oak is the most-specified hardwood in Australian timber flooring. We summarise its working properties and the questions it raises in specification.

European oak (Quercus robur). Specific gravity 0.71. Janka hardness 1,360 lbf. Native to Western Europe and naturalised across much of the temperate north. In flooring, the species's most useful trait is the open grain pattern that takes stain unevenly — a flaw in furniture, a virtue underfoot.

Working properties

  • Density (12% MC): 710 kg/m³
  • Janka hardness: 1,360 lbf (6.0 kN)
  • Bending strength: 97 MPa
  • Modulus of elasticity: 12,000 MPa
  • Tangential shrinkage (green to oven-dry): 7.8%
  • Radial shrinkage: 4.0%
  • Tannin content: high (reacts with iron and some adhesives)

Visual character

European oak ranges from pale straw to mid-honey when freshly milled. It darkens with UV exposure over the first six to eighteen months, settling at a warm light-brown. The grain is straight to slightly interlocked, with prominent medullary rays in quarter-sawn cuts. Knots are common in lower grades; the prevalence of knots is the primary visual differentiation between Prime, Natur, and Rustic grades.

Finish behaviour

European oak takes a broad range of finishes:

  • Natural / clear oil: emphasises the warm undertone. Develops a slight amber patina over years.
  • White oil: visually lightens the floor by counteracting the natural yellow. The most-specified finish in current residential architecture.
  • Smoked or fumed: ammonia-fumed oak develops a deep brown to near-black tone, with greater colour depth at higher tannin areas. A complex process; specify with care.
  • Stained: takes most stains well due to open grain. Quarter-sawn cuts take stain less evenly than flat-sawn.

Formats commonly available

In engineered construction (the standard format for European oak in Australia), boards are commonly:

  • Width: 180–260mm (premium ranges go to 300mm)
  • Thickness: 14–21mm overall, with 3–6mm hardwood wear layer
  • Length: 1,800–2,400mm fixed, or random lengths to 2,260mm

In solid construction (less common, but available): widths to 180mm, thicknesses 19–21mm, lengths to 2,400mm. Solid European oak in Australia is typically pre-finished engineered's edge case — solid boards are heavier, more expensive, and more demanding to install.

Sustainability profile

Commercial European oak is sourced predominantly from FSC- and PEFC-certified managed forests in Poland, France, and Germany. The species is on a 40–80 year rotation depending on the forest management plan, well within sustainable yield thresholds. Topdeck specifies chain-of-custody certified suppliers for its Rhine collection.

Topdeck ranges using this species

Rhine uses European oak exclusively — Lavanda Oak Plank, Cavallo Chevron, Castel Nouveau Herringbone, and Project Oak Plank are all Quercus robur from Pomeranian and adjacent forests.

Provenance includes some European oak alongside other engineered hardwoods. Confirm species per product on the collection page.
